A native of Puerto Rico, Miriam Pico moved with her family to Traverse City 21 years ago, and has come to feel at home here, while still embracing her Hispanic roots and Puerto Rican culture. She greatly appreciates the beauty of the area as well as the family-friendly nature of the community; a place where “someone will always stop to help you.” Married now for 4 years to her husband, Josh Benghauser, whom she instantly fell for while performing in West Side Story at the Old Town Playhouse, Miriam is the proud mother of daughter, Luna Sofia, born in September 2007.
Her local claim to fame is as a talented singer/songwriter. She has been writing since childhood, performing since eleven and released her first album in May of 2005. Besides recording, Miriam is involved in singing at Bay Point Community Church and is also the Music Director for the Hispanic Ministry’s Spanish Mass at St. Joseph’s Church. Miriam is looking forward to SwingShift and the Stars for the challenge of mastering new dance steps. Most importantly she is excited about the opportunity to raise funds for a charity with a mission that is close to her heart, The Women's Resource Center. This non-profit was selected in honor of her mother, who, years ago, had the courage to leave behind an abusive situation with Miriam and her 3 other children to seek a better life in Traverse City.
