Safe Harbor

Lou Grettenberger & Kat Brown

Safe Harbor is a collaborative ministry of more than 15 churches in the Grand Traverse area that provide temporary emergency winter shelter and food for those in need in our community between the months of October and March. Keeping the homeless population safe and warm during the upcoming winter months is the focus of the program.  Due to the growing need for these services in the area, area homeless shelters are at capacity, making Safe Harbor essential for those looking to escape the harsh winter elements.

The Traverse Health Clinic and Coalition (THCC)

Brenda Biederman & Tom Morrell

The Traverse Health Clinic and Coalition (THCC) is the name of the recently merged Community Health Clinic, a free clinic in existence in Traverse City for 35 years, and the Grand Traverse Regional Health Care Coalition, formed in 2003 to create programs for access to health services in Benzie, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties.  The mission of THCC is to promote access, with dignity, to comprehensive, affordable health care.  This mission is achieved through the direct provision of primary care at the Clinic and the operation of health access programs.

THCC provides a health care home, with free and low cost care, to about 1,500 uninsured people, with 6,000 office visits per year.  The volunteer Coalition Health Access Program (CHAP) is the main THCC program, with about 1,500 enrollees.  CHAP is a program to assist uninsured adults 19 years and older, who do not qualify for other programs and who meet financial criteria.  Health care services provided through CHAP include: access to lab, x-rays and outpatient services at Munson facilities, specialty referrals, and limited medication coverage.   THCC also operates a dental access and vision program. Since April 2005, almost $6 million in free health services have been given to uninsured persons in the three counties. THCC relies heavily on volunteerism to provide this much needed health care assistance.
